Celeste is a 48-year-old physical therapist who works at a community hospital in Southern California. Celeste is well like and respected by both the staff and her patients. Celeste is a single mother of a 13-year-old girl, who attends 8th grade at a private Christian school. Celeste has battled chronic uncontrolled hypertension for years and a few years ago she was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy that was managed with ACE inhibitors.

The past few months, Celeste’s health has been declining and she was recently admitted to the hospital with cardiac arrhythmias and blood clots.

Celeste is no longer able to work and her physician has informed Celeste her condition is no longer manageable with medical therapies. If Celeste does not get a heart transplant she most likely will not make it to the new year.

The entire hospital community, her daughter’s private school family, and her daughter are devastated. Due to her end stage cardiomyopathy, Celeste’s parents have moved in to help with Celeste’s daughter and her personal care.

 

Brandon is a 56-year-old construction worker who suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Brandon is married to his high school sweetheart and they have two boys ages 11and 9 years old. For the past few months Brandon has been experiencing shortness of breath, especially at work, fatigue, bilateral lower leg and ankle edema as well as swelling in the veins of his neck. When Brandon started experiencing irregular heart beats he notified his doctor and went in for a check-up. Brandon was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and was treated with Verapamil but is medication resistant and he now requires a heart transplant to survive.

 

A heart has become available and both Celeste and Brandon are an exact match. Who should get the heart?
