Evolution is the process of change that can result in an adaptation or an adaptive trait that provides a functional advantage to a group of organisms. Adaptive traits can occur through both divergent evolution and convergent evolution. Provide a brief account of these two forms of evolution giving examples of animals with similar traits that have developed through both of these natural processes. Discuss which ( if either) has the greatest impact on speciation.

The genetic sequence of a homeotic gene

The genetic sequence of a homeotic gene in two distantly related species is compared and is found to be extremely similar in sequence. What can you infer about this situation?
That the genotype associated with this gene experiences weak directional selection in both species.

That the phenotype associated with this gene experiences different selective pressures in the two species.

That the genotype associated with this gene experiences different selective pressures in the two species.

That the genotype associated with this gene experiences selection in either of the two species.

That the phenotype associated with this gene experiences strong stabilizing selection in both species.

That the phenotype associated with this gene experiences selection in either of the two species.

Right upper quadrant pain

A 55-year-old woman is complaining of right upper quadrant pain for the past 5 hours. She said she has had two or three similar episodes in the past; however, they only lasted 1 hour, and the pain was not as severe as with this episode. She thought the prior episodes were due to heartburn, and she has taken over-the-counter antacids with some relief but this time she has not had relief. This episode is rated as an 8 of 10 scale (0 no pain, 10 severe pain). The pain is constant and does not radiate. She says the pain started a few hours after she had lunch (states she ate a fast-food burger). She feels nauseous but has not vomited. She has been getting chills but also feels sweaty. She feels warm but does not know if she has a fever as she has not checked her temperature. Past medical history: type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. Medications: metformin 1,000-mg 1 tablet twice a day; atorvastatin 10-mg 1 tablet a day; and estrogen/progestin hormone replacement therapy 0.3-mg/1.5-mg 1 tablet a day. Social history: does not smoke or drink alcohol; works as a cashier in a grocery store, is married, and has no children. Vital signs: temperature 101.0° F, heart rate 110 beats per minute, respiratory rate 20 breaths per minute, blood pressure 140/80 mmHg, body mass index 31 kg/m2. Answer the following questions pertaining to this case.

1. What is the most likely diagnosis based on this history, vital signs, and body mass index?

2. What are the data to support the diagnosis chosen in 1?

3. What are expected physical examination findings?

4. What are the expected findings on a complete blood count and abdominal ultrasound that would support the most likely diagnosis?

Colposcopy diagnosis

While having her vital signs taken, Sadira bursts into tears. She tearfully explains that she’s afraid that she has cancer, and that no one at her regular physician’s office told her what to expect from this procedure. Sebaceous cyst in the neck

Abbey Mendy is having a sebaceous cyst removed from her neck. She wants to know why the antiseptic applied to her neck is orange and whether it is going to stain her skin permanently. During the procedure, Abbey reaches her hand up to adjust her hair and accidentally touches the physician’s gloved hand. After the procedure, a sterile dressing is applied to her neck, and she is given an appointment to return to have her sutures removed. Abbey becomes alarmed when she is told that the cyst will be sent to the laboratory for a biopsy. She wants to know whether the physician is not telling her everything about her condition, and she is concerned that maybe he thinks she has cancer. Abbey asks if her neighbor can take out her sutures. She says that he has worked as a veterinary assistant for the past 8 years and has lots of experience in removing stitches. What Would You Do?
