The patient’s regimen of drugs and herbal products

A 30-year-old woman is in the clinic for her yearly gynecologic checkup. She is not pregnant but would like to have children soon and states that she and her husband are trying to conceive. She says that she is “very concerned” about her health, and watches her diet and exercises regularly to stay in shape.

She has a family history of heart disease but no other health concerns. Her physical assessment reveals no abnormalities or health problems.

She is taking:

  • Echinacea, from September to March, to prevent the flu
  • Adult aspirin, one tablet every day, to prevent heart attacks
  • Garlic tablets twice a day for her heart
  • Kava tea, as needed for relaxation
  • One glass of red wine with dinner
  • Valerian capsules for sleep, prn (3-4 times a week)

  1. Does the patient’s regimen of drugs and herbal products pose any risk for drug or herbal interactions? (Explain)
  2. Do any of these products have the potential for problems if used long-term?
  3. She tells you that she thinks that herbal products are “safe” because the government would not allow them to be sold if they were not. Is this true? (Explain your answer)
  4. What would you emphasize when teaching her about the use of herbal products and OTC drugs?

Clinical preventive and health promotion treatments

To fulfil requirements for payment, record health assessment data succinctly, accurately, and logically. Concisely and methodically conduct a comprehensive physical, psychological, developmental, and cultural examination.

To start creating a patient plan of treatment, carefully examine the results of the physical examination and the interview data.
Manage communication with patients, other healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders in an effective manner while being sensitive to gender and cultural variations.

When providing clinical preventive and health promotion treatments and/or services to individuals, families, communities, and aggregates/clinical populations, develop patient-centred and culturally sensitive techniques.
Through the use of nursing science and other scientific principles, advance equitable and effective preventative services and promote efficient population-based health policy.

Explain the role of health education in health promotion

Explain the role of health education in health promotion. How is the nursing process used in developing health education? Describe a contemporary issue, local or global, that a family may experience today. What steps would the nurse take to address these as part of a health education plan?

Nursing Care plan and Drug study

Make a Nursing Care plan and Drug study based on the given scenario Case Scenario: Mrs Beltran, a 30-year-old woman, gravida 1, para 1 who gave birth at term, birth weight 3.5 kg. Mrs Beltran and her son, 5 days of age, were seen in the lactation clinic for sore nipples. She experienced breast fullness during the third post-partum day, and by the fifth day they are painfully engorged.

Following engorgement, her nipples began to crack.

Nipples now “seem to hurt all the time”. She reports that severe nipple pain occurs with latch-on.

Mrs Beltran appeared to be tired and downhearted. She reports that her baby was crying a lot, did not sleep well and was not gaining weight well. Her baby starts well but soon stops, apparently because he was not getting enough.

He would then cry and be reluctant to take the breast again. Her vital signs were: BP: 130/90 mmHg, PR: 95 bpm, RR: 20 CPM and Temp: 37.8 C.

A maternal breast examination revealed moderately engorged breasts. Nipples are everted, approximately 1 cm in size with a linear fissure diagonally from 2 to 8 o’clock on the left side and 10 to 4 o’clock on the right.

She was given ibuprofen to reduce the discomfort and pain.
