The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community

As part of Project Task 1, you explored various issues prevailing in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in your area of practice. The project report for this task must address the following questions: • How would you address these impacts when working with the community, demonstrating an understanding of your biases and limitations?

• Research and discuss the western systems and structures prevalent in your area of practice. • How do these western systems and structures impact on the community?

• Describe the key objectives of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005.

• Identify and briefly describe any other piece of legislation you should comply with to ensure Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety.

• Provide one (1) example each of how power relationships have manifested themselves in recent and in early colonial times (past and present power relationships).

• Briefly describe the impact of trauma on a person’s ability for: o Decision-making o Communicating o Understanding o Retaining information
