Anatomic pathology laboratory information system
“Currently Kaiser Permanente (KP) laboratories utilize Cerner
CoPathPlus (CPP) as their anatomic pathology laboratory information system. CPP does not have native integration with KP Health Connect (KPHC), and interfaces were built out in each market to provide integration.” (Epic, 2020, p. 3). The Kaiser system laboratory uses Cerner and CoPath for their labs and a form of Epic called Health Connect (KPHC) by Kaiser. Cerner has announced they are retiring CPP. So all of Kaiser has decided to take Beaker AP which is owned and integrates with Epic and KPHC.
Speaking with the Histology and Pathology departments currently, they have identified many gaps that are occurring with CoPath that they would like changed/ fixed when Beaker gets put into place. Beaker has been used by many other labs outside of Kaiser for years and reports that it works well. Phase 1, which is happening now, includes the scope, concept, and collaborative build and deployment in 2 markets. Colorado, which is where I am located, is one of the 2 markets. Nursing informatics, Lab informatics, IT, project management, and executive leadership are involved in phase 1. Implementing Beaker will allow the anatomic pathology laboratory to be able to have orders and results interface with health connect that is currently in use. This software will be updated with the quarterly Epic updates and there are no plans to retire this software. The solution is to change to software that already integrates with their current system since CoPath is being retired.
READ THE ABOVE. What do you agree and disagree with? What did you find interesting? What else might you add? Is this a good project to work on? Explain.
