Antenatal screening tests and care
Marianne Lewis has attended her booking appointment at 8 weeks pregnant. The midwife Leah, has taken a detailed medical, obstetric, and family history. She has discussed the place of birth – Marianne is considering a home birth. The midwife has also discussed diet and healthy eating with a focus on ensuring iron-rich foods as Marianne is vegan but also has a history of iron deficiency anemia with her last 2 pregnancies. Iron supplementation caused severe constipation and she is keen to avoid it this time. Leah has discussed national antenatal screening tests and provided a booklet to supplement this verbal information. As yet Marianne is unsure about accepting some of them.
Leah has undertaken a set of maternal observations as a baseline which were all within normal limits. Urinalysis was normal – Marianne had previously seen the GP for frequency of micturition and increased vaginal discharge but nothing abnormal was detected and no treatment was necessary.
