Discuss the mechanism of the antibiotics chloramphenicol and rifampicin. Chloramphenicol is primarily used for topical treatment of eye infections as it shows systemic toxicity despite the fact that it does not inhibit eukaryotic ribosomes. However, chloramphenicol does inhibit some protein synthesis in the eukaryotic cell.
