Discussion: Cultural Awareness in Social Work Practice In order to become a practitioner who addresses the diverse needs of your clients in a sensitive and respectful manner, you must be dedicated to continued education around the needs and experiences of different groups, religions, ethnicities, and other populations.

The first step is to identify any personal biases and perceptions you might have about other cultures. From a broader perspective, how might an individual’s culture, race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation affect how society perceives and treats them?

Which potential social structures may perpetuate the oppression and marginalization of certain groups? The most important attribute you can bring to this topic is an open mind and a willingness to learn about others unlike yourself and ask how they want to be treated by you as a social worker. In this Discussion, you consider these topics in relation to a case study depicting issues in cultural competence.

To Prepare

Review this week’s Learning Resources, including the videos, and then reflect on the following:

What is your definition of cultural competency?

What skills do you think are necessary for attaining cultural competence as a social worker working with that population?

What is the difference between having knowledge about a cultural group and engaging with an individual from the stance of cultural humility?

Then, search the Walden Library for additional information that supports the skills you selected.

For help with this discussion, please refer back to the Library recommendations in Week 3.

Helpful hint: Try using different keywords including:

cultural intelligence

cultural sensitivity

cultural humility

cultural competence

cultural literacy

Add the keyword “skills” to find articles on specific skills that promote cultural awareness in social work practice.

By Day 3

Post a response to the following:

Provide your definition of cultural humility.

Explain how this is similar or different to how the Kirst-Ashman and Hull textbook describes cultural competence.

Explain the skills you think are necessary for developing cultural awareness as a social worker.

Support your post with examples from the course text and any other resources used to respond to this Discussion. Demonstrate that you have completed the required readings, understand the material, and are able to apply the concepts. Include a full reference of resources at the bottom of the post.

Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development

Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment.

To Prepare:

· Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.

· Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.

· Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

By Day 3 of Week 6

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described.

Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.

Nursing informatics and healthcare technology use have continually been recognized as essential elements of medical practice. According to McGonigle & Mastrian (2022), nursing informatics typically entails incorporating nursing information or data and the practice’s knowledge to manage healthcare information.

In particular, the practice is founded on extensive use of healthcare technology to improve health outcomes by increasing patient care quality and safety. Over the years, numerous healthcare centers in the United States have adopted different healthcare technology trends to improve their overall patient outcomes. Therefore, the post discusses one of the general medical technology trends utilized in my organization, including possible risks or challenges and benefits of using the trend.

The covid-19 pandemic’s onset set forth a vast utilization of telehealth in my organization. Essentially, the healthcare technology trend involves using devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and laptops to organize and continually administer patient care services, primarily to home and remote-based patients.

In most circumstances, when a caregiver reported for their shift, they would be given a wearable smartphone which they would bring along throughout their shift, enabling constant communication with other healthcare professionals, especially between physicians and nurses, and with patients in remote regions or at home.

Dykes et al. (2017) describe how technology facilitates engagement communication, primarily with patients, resulting in patient safety because the healthcare practitioner can quickly respond to any health crisis. Consequently, telehealth in my organization displayed an increment of patient safety evidenced by less readmission and heightened patient satisfaction rates.

The actual proposal that you will be submitting should outline a problem that you want to solve and how you will use data mining techniques to solve it.

The actual proposal that you will be submitting should outline a problem that you want to solve and how you will use data mining techniques to solve it. A business problem from your work would be a likely candidate but it doesn’t have to be directly related to your work. The key is that this should not be a hypothetical example like something from the textbook, it should be something with which you have personal experience.

The draft of your proposal should include:

1. A description of the problem you want to support with a data science solution

2. Why the problem you selected can be solved with predictive modeling

3. The use you want to support with this solution and how it could add value to an organization

4. A description of the model and data mining techniques that will be used and why they are appropriate given the problem at hand. If doing supervised learning the target variable should be clear.

5. How and where you would get the data required to train your model. This should also include at least 5 attributes that would help your predictive modeling.

Note that you are not required to find real data nor perform any data analysis for this project, but you should write your proposal as if this were the start of a real project you were considering undertaking. When writing your proposal, consider the steps of the CRISP-DM process to help guide your thinking. However, the proposal should be written in paragraph form.

As increased attention is given to the realities of structural racism and sexism in American culture, organizations are increasingly focused on diversifying talent, creating a mission of anti-racism

Context: As increased attention is given to the realities of structural racism and sexism in American culture, organizations are increasingly focused on diversifying talent, creating a mission of anti-racism and equity, and hiring a workforce that is trained to think about the value of diversity, inclusivity, and equity at work.  In “Do your Employees Know Why You Believe in Racial Equity,” Ruchika Tulshyan asserts that “done right, creating diverse, equitable, inclusive organizations yield greater profitabilityinnovation, and smarter teams.”  In other words, a commitment to inclusion and equity is critical to organizational success.

This post asks you to reflect on the value of diversity, inclusivity and equity at work and the ways in which you can be a more effective ally.  Finally, you will consider resources on anti-descrimination policies so that you are better equipped to advocate for yourself and your colleagues in the workplace.

Initial Post:  (Due date on syllabus)

  1. Watch the following two videos:
    1.  Stovall, Janet. TED Talks (2018, September 13). “How to Get Serious about Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvdHqS3ryw0
    2.  Epler, Melinda. TED Talks (2018, October 4). “3 Ways to Be a Better Ally in the Workplace.” https://www.ted.com/talks/melinda_epler_3_ways_to_be_a_better_ally_in_the_workplace?language=en
  2. Create an initial discussion post in which you answer the following questions, referring to both video sources in your post.  All sources should be integrated following APA guidelines.
  • What are the benefits of diverse and inclusive workplaces? Why, does Stovall suggest, is business a critical place to dismantle racism?
  • What is the difference between inclusion and diversity? What do you think organizations, their leaders, and their employees can do to cultivate a culture of inclusion?
  • How is equity different from inclusion and diversity? How can we approach work with a focus on equity?
  • What does it mean to be an ally in the workplace; how can you be a better ally in your workplace or in your life more generally?

Response Post: (Due date on syllabus)

  1. Read the following articles:

  2. Read your classmates’ initial discussion posts.  Choose one post that resonates with you.
  3. Respond to your chosen post.  In your response, answer the following questions and integrate at least one source, using APA format:
    • What about this writer’s discussion of being an ally in the workplace resonates with you?  What additional suggestions can you add for how someone can be an ally in the workplace?
    • How can employees protect each other and themselves from discrimin
