An Assisted living facility

Make an appointment to visit an assisted living facility that has different levels of homes and support. Use the AARP checklist to develop a set of appropriate questions to ask the administrator or designee.

Take pictures only if allowed. Submit a list of the questions and a summary of what you discovered. Identify the site visited and who you interviewed along with the locations within the site they you were allowed to see.

You will want to find out how if Medicare and/or Medicaid covers any of the expense.

Also find out what services are provided and the medical personnel (by type) available.

Natural and organic foods

Elizabeth was a “granola mom”—it was only natural and organic foods and therapies for her family. She belonged to a food co-op and ordered special foods and home remedies through the group.

Elizabeth was well read and conscientious, and she had a remedy for everything.

Little white pills that dissolved under the tongue treated everything from teething to bruising.

When her 8-year-old daughter Samantha had a sore throat, Elizabeth had her gargle with

colloidal silver—a remedy used before all the new and “dangerous” antibiotics. Samantha did

get over her sore throat, but three weeks later, she broke out in a rash, complained that her

joints hurt, and had swollen glands. This worried Elizabeth, and so she consulted a

conventional medical doctor.

Samantha was diagnosed with rheumatic fever, and the doctor prescribed antibiotic treatment.

Elizabeth had read that antibiotics could damage the immune system, and was reluctant to

give them to her daughter.

How can you as a nurse, encourage compliance with long-term antibiotic treatment without

alienating Elizabeth? To what extent does a parent have the right to refuse medical advice for

a child? When are alternative therapies helpful?

Effective verbal and nonverbal communication in various situations.

In our work and personal lives, we need to identify and analyze effective verbal and nonverbal communication in various situations.

In the same way that you would analyze a work or personal life communication situation, you will be asked to create a short presentation (using media choices below) about the nonverbal communication demonstrated in a series of photographs.

In addition to identifying aspects of nonverbal communication, you will also need to show how these elements can affect communication both positively and negatively.

Finally, include your observations of how nonverbal elements that you see alter the direction of communication.

  1. Select four of included photographs.
  2. Using either PowerPoint or Prezi, create a presentation that demonstrates your comprehension regarding these communication elements: Please include the following:
  3. A title slide including your name.
  4. Four slides that explain aspects of the nonverbal communication that you see depicted in the photographs. Be sure to include the photograph on the slide. Be as specific and detailed as possible in your description of body language, facial expression, physical distance (if applicable), gesture, and other aspects of nonverbal communication that you see.
  5. Using Screencast-o-Matic (screencast-o-matic.com) or similar software, create a short video presentation of your PowerPoint or Prezi.
  6. Explain in detail the nonverbal elements of communication that you observe in each of the four photographs you have selected. The video should be between four and seven minutes long. This video should either be of the presentation or a hybrid video that includes both the presentation and an inset webcam video.
  7. Upload your video to screencast-o-Matic, YouTube, or similar online video sharing site and provide a link to your video. Include your PowerPoint or Prezi with your submission.
