Since 2005, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has supported an initiative called QSEN – Quality and Safety Education for Nurses. They realized the value and importance of continuous quality improvement and the role that nurses have the ability, perhaps the honor, to lead! Take a look on the QSEN website and review the Competencies that outline the knowledge, skills and attitudes that the QSEN project has developed to define what we need to know for safe practice. The website is full of great information and include education, research, good reviews.

We all know that we work in complex environments – why is it so complex? Many factors that might include: time pressures, high stake decision making, communication/information concerns, poorly defined goals and policies/processes, rapidly changing conditions, team work (or lack thereof) – all of which lead to the stress of our environment.

If you are currently working in a hospital, no doubt you are well aware of the core measures that are used to evaluate performance. Nurses have a key role. Think about what you can do to enhance safety in any of these areas.
