Describe one possible way a public health nurse could engage in activism

Describe one possible way a public health nurse could engage in activism (serve as a change agent) to address issues of health inequity experienced by the mental health and homeless vulnerable population.

  1. Describe one desired goal/outcome that you would like to achieve through your actions (engagement).
  2. Identify one legislator or political leader within your community that you would approach regarding the issue.
  3. Discuss how you would communicate your message with the representative.

The problem of obesity

You have been asked by your local elementary school principal to address a group of parents about the problem of obesity. Among the topics you have been asked to talk about are good nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes.  Since all of your parents are adults, list five principles of adult learning and describe how you would incorporate them into your teaching plan. The principal and the parents would like you to develop a health education program that addresses obesity in elementary school. List five important points about teaching children that you would need to consider in planning your program. Compare and contrast the strategies you would use for elementary school students versus adults.

Nursing Process and Clinical Judgment functions

Watch the video and read the following case study. Students must reflect on all material presented. Provide feedback/answers based on the literature. Use the Foundations of Nursing Text as your primary source and 2 other sources.

A nurse is working to admit a 45-year-old male client who speaks a different language than the nurse and was found unresponsive at work. The client was transferred by ambulance to the emergency department and found to be in a coma secondary to severely elevated blood sugar.

The client’s health history includes a new diagnosis of diabetes 6 months previously and hypertension. The client is currently awake and alert. As the nurse takes the client’s information through an interpreter, the client indicates he works in a meat processing facility, does not have any sick time allowance, and is concerned about losing his job due to being ill.

He indicated that he could not afford to take off work to keep his follow-up appointment with his primary care provider after being diagnosed with diabetes.

The client indicates he and his wife both work at the processing plant and often work 12 hours per day, 6 days per week. Because of their work hours, their 15-year-old daughter does most of the cooking for the family. The couple sees the physician only when absolutely necessary.

They do see the employee health care nurse at the facility for blood pressure checks each month. Anticipated follow-up will include routine physician visits to check hemoglobin A1c levels and adjust medication to treat diabetes. The provider notes the client would benefit from working with a diabetes educator. Respond to the following questions and provide an evidence-based rationale.

(The related steps of the Nursing Process and Clinical Judgment functions are listed after each question below.)

  • Identify relevant information that suggests the client may be experiencing health disparities. (RECOGNIZE CUES/ASSESSMENT)
  •  Identify potential illness progression if the client is unable to get follow-up care needed for his diagnosis of diabetes. (ANALYZE CUES/ANALYSIS)
  • Identify needs the client may have at this time related to his health condition. (ANALYZE CUES/ANALYSIS)
  • Prioritize the client’s needs you identified and provide a rationale for your response. (PRIORITIZE HYPOTHESIS/ANALYSIS)
  • Identify strategies the nurse can use to collaborate effectively with the client to meet his care needs. (GENERATE SOLUTIONS/PLANNING)
  • Identify the optimal client outcomes in this scenario. (GENERATE SOLUTIONS/ PLANNING)
  • What additional assessment findings should the nurse collect to address health disparities and support health equity for this client (refer to Lesson 26)? (TAKE ACTIONS/IMPLEMENTATION)
  • How will the nurse determine optimal client outcomes are met? (EVALUATE OUTCOMES/EVALUATION)

The importance of nutritional balance and moderation

Which of the two concepts describes how you would usually consume your meals? Describe the importance of nutritional balance and moderation, how it affects your health, and what types of recommendations can be made to achieve a healthy diet. Do you agree with the textbook that smaller meals eaten more often will help reduce your appetite throughout the day?

Develop a reflection of self, therapeutic use of self, and reflection of relationship assessment skills and therapeutic communication with another person.

The purpose of the reflective journal is to allow the student to develop a reflection of self, therapeutic use of self, and reflection of relationship assessment skills and therapeutic communication with another person. The student may use the following formats for reflection (the paper is to be written in one of these formats only):

  • Johns’ Model of Reflection
  • Carper’s Ways of Knowing
  • Sister Roach’s Six C’s of Caring
  • Boud’s Model of Reflection

Discuss a legal or ethical issue you have discovered during a mental health nursing simulation or in current event discussions this semester.  Identify and consider the ethical principles that were evident in the situation and how these principles were adhered to or violated. What did you learn from this experience & how will it impact your practice?  Utilize one of the models of reflection (above) to frame your response.

Value of obtaining descriptive statistics in the research design of your DPI project

What is the importance or value of obtaining descriptive statistics in the research design of your DPI project (Diabetes self-efficacy and lower HA1C levels in adults with type 2 diabetes by using a journal to record exercise, diet and blood sugar levels?

The importance of hand hygiene

Brian is a new nurse and has been working in the medical unit for the last 2 months. Last month, a client died because of nosocomial infection. The hospital administration and educators have been speaking to staff about reducing nosocomial infection rates and the importance of hand hygiene in that endeavour. Brian notices that Dr. Wells enters his client’s room without using hand sanitizer or washing her hands, assesses the client, and then goes to the next client. Brian is aware that this is poor hygiene and against hospital policy. Brian is concerned for his client’s safety and those of other clients and wonders how best to address the problem. Brian is worried that because he is new that he may not be the best person to address the issue. He feels certain that since this is a big problem, others must be watching and they will speak to the doctor, so he chooses to say nothing.

1. What are possible actions that Brian could have taken instead of

Silence? Where is your answer?

2. What could the possible outcomes be of each action? Where is your answer?

3. If Brian’s client develops an infection as a result of poor hand

washing practices, will Brian be held responsible since he was

aware of the problem and did nothing? Where is your answer?

4. What are Brian’s ethical and legal responsibilities as a nurse? Where is your answer?

Diabetic patients

Healthcare cost is something that needs to be reviewed and improved upon. Diabetic patients can be challenging to track when it comes to savings because you may not always know how readmissions were reduced. Or if a patient went to a different hospital. Have you found a good way to track Diabetic patients in your DPI project?
