Continuity management and disaster preparedness

This week we reviewed continuity management and disaster preparedness. Imagine that you are the unit manager for your unit and serve as a member of the disaster planning committee. In preparation for this discussion, you must seek out the disaster plan for your unit. You are tasked with evaluating your unit’s disaster management plan and the roles that each member of the unit is to play in a disaster situation.

Note that a disaster hazard could range from a natural disaster to a pandemic. For this scenario, you may select a natural disaster, technology disaster, civil or political unrest situation, chemical accident, humanitarian issue, or an infectious disease scenario.

Provide a discussion response that includes each of the following prompts:

  1. What is the accessibility of the disaster plan for the unit? Describe how you were able to locate it.
  2. Briefly explain the downtime process for your unit during a disaster.
  3. What is the role of the nurse in the disaster hazard that you have chosen? How is the nurse’s role different from the nurse manager’s role? Explain the response.
  4. What improvements would you make to your unit’s disaster management plan?

(NOTE: do not include any names of organizations or any personal identifiers in your post.)

Please support your response with a scholarly source.

This activity aligns with course outcome:

Explain the ethical implications associated with the management of healthcare data and the patient’s personal health record. (Essential IV.2. IV.3, IV. 6, IV. 8, IV.11, and IV.12)

Epidural catheter inserted for pain management

A 67-year-old client had an epidural catheter inserted for pain management following a total knee replacement. After successful treatment of an episode of hypotension in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU), he was transferred to the medical-surgical unit. The registered nurses assessed the client and delegated direct care to an LPN, although the LPN denied this.

Three hours later, the client experienced nausea and vomiting. The client was found cyanotic and unresponsive 10 minutes later and subsequently died of anoxic encephalopathy. Many facts were disputed among the numerous codefendants and there was poor documentation (Nurses Service Organization, 2012).

  1. What priority assessments were missed, and how could this have been avoided?
  2. What steps of the nursing process were done inappropriately or missed completely, and why?
  3. What steps of the delegation were inappropriate, and why?
  4. What could have been done to prevent this outcome?

Intermittent pleuritic chest pain

Ms X, a 32-year-old Hispanic woman, has had a history of intermittent pleuritic chest pain and joint pain for the past several years. Recently, she went to her physician because she noticed that an erythematous, butterfly-shaped rash had appeared on her face. Further lab tests indicated protein in her urine.

Her blood test indicated the presence of numerous antinuclear antibodies, especially anti-DNA, and mature neutrophils containing nuclear material. A diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was made. (Refer to Chapter 7, Immunity) Questions:

1. Lupus can mimic other conditions, and the condition manifests itself differently in each individual. What are some differential diagnoses that might be investigated and would need to be ruled out based on Ms.X’s symptoms before making the diagnosis of lupus?

Important for the  Registered nurses to know when making daily patient care assignments

What additional information would be important for the  Registered nurses to know when making daily patient care assignments? Why is this information pertinent to the RN? Choose at least two leadership concepts that are important to embrace when working with other healthcare providers. How do these concepts impact interprofessional collaboration?

  • Identify two tasks that can be assigned to a licensed practical nurse and two tasks that can be assigned to unlicensed assistive personnel. What is the nurse’s responsibility in assigning these tasks?

Identify two strategies the nurse should use to help ensure that clients participate in the decision-making process

Provide an example of a different approach the nurse might take to resolve the conflict between Mrs Lieberman and her daughter. Identify two strategies the nurse should use to help ensure that clients participate in the decision-making process regarding their care.

  • What types of patient and family teaching must be provided to understand the principles associated with informed consent, refusal of treatment, and advance directives?
  • How would your interactions make the patient and their family members feel?
  • How would therapeutic communication play a role in this interaction?

Which Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) category explained in the textbook (Figure 6.1) do you or would you use most often in your current employment? Explain the category and how you do or would effectively use the category. Would you every bill from multiple categories? Explain.

The Peripheral vascular system

Pick one diagnosis from the Cardiovascular system AND one diagnosis from the Peripheral vascular system of your choosing. 1) Describe your diagnosis in detail.

2) What subjective symptoms would the patient describe to you?

3) What objective symptoms would you find on examination?

4) What laboratory data would you need to help support your diagnosis? What are the normal and abnormal findings of your labs.

5) What medical imaging do you need to help support these diagnoses? Do you need to order other imaging before you order this imaging?!

6) Utilizing, your previous pathophysiology and pharmacology, how you would as the provider, treat each diagnosis?

Diagnosis of explosive disorder intermittent

Hypothetical Relator Process. HRR is a 24-year-old male admitted to a forensic unit who attends group therapies and receives follow-up for his diagnosis of explosive disorder intermittent During the group session limits have been placed on HRR for its

inappropriate drawbacks in the group. During the first interaction that the student of

the nurse had with HRR, he had been excessively courteous. However in the days

subsequent sessions the client has been behaving inappropriately and in the last

group was extremely harsh and hostile towards another member of the group. The student had to give

monitoring HRR outside the group in his office. It had good lighting, temperature

nice, no noise, good cleanliness and privacy provided. The client is observed

dressed in clean blue pants, a white short-sleeved polo shirt, groomed and shaved. The

The purpose of the interaction was for HRR to identify at least one incident where a

person I can demonstrate an act of kindness or care towards others and still see myself

same as masculine. During the interaction there were no incidents that interrupted the interaction.

HRR: “Bunch of losers.” (Using a hostile tone of voice and high volume,

time to leave group therapy)

Student: (I was surprised how quickly HRR turned to courage just because another

member of the group sat in the chair that HRR had selected for the session

of group). “Are you talking about what happened in the group?”

HRR: “Just because I made those guys get out of their chairs, what do you think?

is it a big deal?” (Use a hostile tone of voice and high volume)

Student: “But why do you have to yell at them? I heard yelling and offensive language.”

(I felt a lot of anger, I remembered when my father yelled at me and humiliated me in front of

others). “What were you feeling when you saw that other customer sitting in the chair you

you wanted?”

HRR: “Listen, I always get a raw deal. The group leader prefers these

guys more than me.”

Student: “But when this happens, what are you feeling?”

HRR: “Nothing, forget it.”

Student: “I think I would get frustrated returning chairs to other customers, maybe

even embarrassed.”

HRR: (avoiding eye contact) “My father would have beaten me up for letting those

guys will win.”

Student: “You are able to tell how your father raised you by the force of his fists. I guess

that any young child would feel great pressure when interacting with

others it is simplified to whether you win or you get beaten.”

HRR: “He just taught me how to be a man.”

Student: “I wonder if a person can be a man in other ways than

win or lose. This morning I saw him help when someone bumped into the customer who

bring breakfast to those eating in the unit.”

HRR: “What a disaster.”

Student: “And you helped him anyway. Then when the customer apologized you

He said it was fine. That accidents happen.”

HRR: “The others also help.”

Student: “You also spoke nicely to him.”

HRR: (HRR shrugs.)

Student: “Sometimes it seems that manliness and kindness can coexist in one person.”

HRR: (nodding softly) “I need some water.” (Leaves the office

and directs to the water source).

Based on this hypothetical interaction:

1. Identify the phase of the therapeutic relationship.

2. Carry out the analysis of the interaction through the reporting process.

3. Let yourself be guided by the criteria of the rubric so that you respond to all the criteria that are
