Briefly describe Skinner’s theory of behavior

Briefly describe Skinner’s theory of behavior. Provide an example of how behavior is acquired and define each element.

2. Briefly describe the contrasting effects of electrical stimulation and lesions of the lateral and ventromedial hypothalamus on feeding behavior.

3. Briefly describe the syndrome that arises from bilateral removal of the amygdala, and what this tells us about the role of the amygdala in behavior.

4. Define innate releasing mechanism (IRM) and give an example.

5. Describe the pathways of the mesolimbic dopamine system and briefly explain why it is central to circuits mediating reward.

What is an example of Skinners theory?
Skinner showed how negative reinforcement worked by placing a rat in his Skinner box and then subjecting it to an unpleasant electric current which caused it some discomfort. As the rat moved about the box it would accidentally knock the lever. Immediately it did so the electric current would be switched off.

Advances in healthcare and medicine

With the current life expectancy almost double than what it was a century ago, do you believe living longer the same as being healthy?
Life expectancy at birth doubled from around 40 years to more than 81 years. This achievement was not limited to England and Wales; since the late 19th century life expectancy doubled across all regions of the world.
Why is life expectancy higher than 100 years ago?
However, while most people imagine medical advancements to be the reason for this increase, the largest gain in life expectancy occurred between 1880 and 1920 due to public health improvements such as control of infectious diseases, more abundant and safer foods, cleaner water, and other nonmedical social improvements.
How has life expectancy improved in recent times?

Improved healthcare and advances in medicine

There are several advances in healthcare and medicine that have increased life expectancy. One of the most important is the development of vaccines. Before the development of vaccines, diseases such as smallpox and polio killed millions of people each year.

Factors associated with coronary heart disease

The “Type A” behavioral pattern is one of the strongest factors associated with coronary heart disease. If you are an ambitious, driven, angry person, what steps can you take to reduce your risk of heart attack?

What behavioral component of Type A behavior is most predictive of coronary heart disease?
In the late 1950s, the Type A behavior pattern was described as a contributing factor in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Comprised of impatience, achievement striving, competitiveness, and hostility, this pattern does predict the development of CHD.
Type B personalities can be generally summarised as; easy going, relaxed and highly-flexible. Generally taking a much more carefree approach and wider philosophical view of themselves, work/life balance and other traits which make them less stressed and more widely appreciated when compared to Type A personalities.

Describe a substance use disorder testing instrument

Describe a substance use disorder testing instrument. Answer the following questions in your descriptions: A substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental disorder that affects a person’s brain and behavior, leading to a person’s inability to control their use of substances such as legal or illegal drugs, alcohol, or medications. Symptoms can range from moderate to severe, with addiction being the most severe form of SUDs.

How do you diagnose someone with substance use disorder?
Diagnosing drug addiction (substance use disorder) requires a thorough evaluation and often includes an assessment by a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. Blood, urine or other lab tests are used to assess drug use, but they’re not a diagnostic test for addiction.

How did Hippocrates define health and illness?

How did Hippocrates define health and illness? What treatments did he prescribe for helping his patients regain health?

According to Hippocrates, the diagnosis and treatment of mental and physical diseases is based on observation, consideration of the causes, balance of theory and on the four liquids, blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile (22).

What treatments did Hippocrates prescribe for helping his patients regain health?
Hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” treated physical injuries in the 5th Century BCE with friction, a massage technique, and was the first to prescribe a combination of massage, proper diet, exercise, fresh air and music to restore health imbalance – a remedy we hear of even today.
What did Hippocrates mean when he said let the food be they medicine and the medicine be thy food?
Introduction. The title of this review refers to the popular phrase ‘Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’, often ascribed to Hippocrates (400 BC), and used to emphasize the importance of nutrition to prevent or cure disease.

Define the adaptation-level phenomenon

Define the adaptation-level phenomenon and provide at least one example of it. Explain how upward social comparison causes dissatisfaction and how downward social comparison facilitates contentment. In your response, provide one example that demonstrates the relationship between upward social comparison and dissatisfaction, as well as one example that demonstrates the relationship between downward social comparison and contentment.

How does each of these impact our ability to address materialism which is a major contributor to climate change?  Do you have any insight into how we can address this using other social psychology influence principles?

Discuss the importance of group differences in IQ for understanding intelligence

Discuss the importance of group differences in IQ for understanding intelligence.

Considering the article Can Research on the Genetics of Intelligence Be ‘Socially Neutral’? and the textbook chapters on intelligence, compare and discuss at least two group differences in IQ. Why are these differences important for understanding intelligence?

After you have posted your initial response, respond to two of your peers. Discuss some of the factors that were identified to influence intelligence testing (e.g., ethics or cultural differences) and provide a rationale as to why some of these factors may or may not be more influential than others.

The way we approach adolescence today

Share your thoughts here and be detailed as possible in answering these questions. Do you believe the way we approach adolescence today is beneficial to teens and their development, or is it detrimental? Defend your position. Provide two examples to support your argument. These examples can be based on your own experiences and observations, as well as research.

Adolescence doesn’t occur in a vacuum. We discover that the early experiences of an individual greatly influence their later development. Yet, in the case of early negative experiences, most individuals are eventually able to “right” themselves. In other words, they turn out okay as adults.

Why do you think this happens? On the flip side, what makes certain individuals more vulnerable (i.e., continue on a negative pathway of development, never “righting” themselves)? Defend your position with evidence from any textbook or your own research.
