Reflective journaling is a term that refers to documenting your Observations, Occurrences or Experiences (OOEs). Your first journal submission will focus on an experience that you have directly observed, or participated in. Your OOE for this assignment will focus on a communication process that you have personally witnessed and/or participated in.
Some examples to consider might be success or failure in communicating with a patient or peer whose first language is not English, a communication process involving a client who has special needs, or communication with another peer or staff member during a time of stress and/or anxiety just to name a few.
There are many, many communication events that we experience every single day. Types of communication to consider can include verbal, nonverbal and written/text. Don’t forget, your chosen OOE for journal #1 must also include documentation on your interpretation of the described event, with a strong connection on how the OOE has impacted you.

You are the nurse manager of a pediatric oncology unit. You are also the manager of the same day chemo unit that is attached to your inpatient unit. The strategy for delivering chemotherapy to children under the age of 18 is going to change in order to accommodate family schedules and school needs. Children will now be receiving their chemotherapy after 4 PM or on the weekend. This means that many of them will not be finished with their infusions until 10 PM or later and the unit will need to be staffed on the weekend which was not the case previously. This will greatly alter the staffing needs of the unit.
