Use communication to build relationship/ CHCCOM002Case Study A. Mr Palombo is a hostel resident who has limited English. His first language is Italian. Usually he is able to get his meaning across to carers because a number of the carers also speak Italian.

On Tuesday, there were no Italian-speaking carers around and Mr Palambo was becoming agitated.. Sue, one of the carer on shift, gave him a pencil and paper and indicated he should draw what he wanted.

Questions:

Case Study B:

Mr Johnson has recently come into the hostel after losing his wife. He has had some difficulty in settling in, but he does enjoy his meals-even if he needs some assistance with cutting up his food.

Sarah is a recently employed and inexperienced carer.

It is her task today to assist Mr Johnson with his breakfast. Mr Johnson has ordered his favourite breakfast-poached eggs with baked beans on toast.

When Sarah lifts the cover off his meal she pulls a terrible face because she can’t stand eggs or baked beans. Mr Johnson notices her reaction and becomes sad and withdrawn.

Case Study C:

Margaret is a senior personal care worker. On Monday morning she left a note in the communications book for Linda asking her to gather certain prescriptions by 3 p.m. at the latest so that they could be provided to the pharmacist for processing at 4pm.

It is urgent that some residents have their scrips processed today.

At 3.40pm Margaret catches up with Linda and ask has followed through on this request.

Linda has indeed organised the prescriptions but notes dryly that 3.40pm was a bit late in the day for ‘reminder’.
