Function of the ionization state of amino acid

The reaction below is catalyzed by the enzyme fumarase. L-Malate -> Fumarate + H2O. The rate is thought to be a function of the ionization state of amino acid functional groups at the active site.
Explain how functional groups at the active site of an enzyme may result in a variety of activity with pH.
