Global health crisis of staggering proportions
The obesity epidemic is a global health crisis of staggering proportions. Excess body weight is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and Type 2 Diabetes. The prevalence of obesity is increasing in recent decades and is driven by a complex interplay of economic, environmental, and biological factors. In the United States alone, more than a third of the population is obese, and it is expected that by the year 2030, that figure may rise to as much as 50%. Moreover, data from the pediatric population demonstrate a disturbing increase in the rates of overweight and obesity over the past several decades, leading to a greater proportion of life lived with obesity and obesity-associated morbidity.
