Handoff Report Situation: The learner will be providing care for a 80-year-old male (Roger Johnson DOB: 2/21/1941) admitted to the Med/Surgical floor with hypertension (elevated blood pressure). The patient is complaints of "I have a severe headache and it will not go away and I have been so tired recently." Pain level is 10/10. Patient denies of any shortness of breath. He does take metoprolol tartrate (Lopressor) 50mg po twice a day. He did state, "I have not taken my medication in two weeks because I cannot afford the medication" Background: The patient was diagnosed with hypertension when he was 70-year-old. He relies on his monthly social security checks which is 800 dollars month. He did not invest in any retirement plans. He is a retired plumber who smoked 1 pack of cigarettes a day since he was eighteen. Preparation Questions 1. What is the pathophysiology of HTN (hypertension)? Include signs and symptoms.
