Sugar cane production in Jamaica is often done as monoculture on large acreage of lands ranging from 10 to hundreds of hectares, on the island’s coastal plains. Cultivation varies according to the existing conditions, but the trend is for more mechanisation. At present, sugar cane is irrigated at efficiencies between 35 and 40 percent in Clarendon and 50 percent in Saint Catherine using sprinkler systems, with high levels of inputs such as synthetic fertilisers to maintain soil fertility.
