Different Roles within nursing

There are various different roles within nursing that hold some kind of leadership position and it varies between these roles. An example of a formal role where a nurse is in a position of leadership are nurse managers. Nurse managers oversee the team of nurses that have direct contact with patients.

Their main goal is to manage their team of nurses in order to increase retention and also analyze and implement various methods in order to improve the quality of care.

Nurse managers are required to have leadership education which is received from the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) and are highly preferred if they have a Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) but not required depending on the organization.

To me most nursing managers display signs of Participative leadership in which they utilize feedback and think in terms for the benefit for their organization as a team rather than one individual being the boss.

In order to be successful in this role, nurses need to display qualities of critical thinking in order to make decisions while keeping in mind how it may affect others. Communication is also an important quality as it involves not only talking but also actively listening to ideas and concerns others may have and take into consideration.
