What is terminal sedation and what is the doctrine of double effect?

What is terminal sedation and what is the doctrine of double effect? Is the doctrine of double effect able to reconcile the view that terminal sedation is moral, with the view that active euthanasia is normally immoral? Or just those who condone terminal sedation also, as a matter of consistency, condone active euthanasia
