Frequency distributions

Frequency distributions can be graphed with bar charts, histograms or polygons. Choose one variable from the “Health Behavior Data Set” and discuss which type of graph is appropriate and why. Refer to section 2.3 in the Using and Interpreting Statistics: A Practical Text for the Behavioral, Social, and Health Sciences textbook as needed for assistance.

A Shuffling gait with a stooped posture

A 76-year-old patient in a long-term care center has developed a shuffling gait with a stooped posture, along with a hand tremor at rest. The nurse practitioner prescribed carbidopa/levodopa.

•1. The nurse knows that Parkinson’s disease is related to dopamine, but dopamine can’t cross the blood-brain barrier. How will carbidopa/levodopa assist with dopamine levels?•

2. The patient states, “I am looking forward to spending next weekend with my grandson. He even said he would let me drive his new Mustang!” What teaching should the nurse provide the patient and his grandson (with the patient’s permission) regarding the new medication and his weekend plans?

•3. The nurse reads that the most common side effect of carbidopa-levodopa is dyskinesia. What is dyskinesia? If it occurs, what is the likely treatment?

Feelings on loss, grief, or death

Find a creative piece of art or literature (poem, short story, movie, or painting) that expresses feelings on loss, grief, or death. Reflect on the emotions being expressed and interpret the meaning this piece has for you as you promote a dignified, peaceful death for your elderly patients.

Be sure to address the following questions in your response:

  • How do the emotions and feelings expressed relate to any age, and how might they be similar or different to the loss and grief seen more commonly with advanced age?
  • Does this change your awareness or sensitivity to any aspect of “death and dying”? If so, how? If not, how does it reinforce previously held beliefs?
  • In what way are cultural or religious beliefs reflected in the artistic expression?
  • Can you think of specific practices you would like to see changed in your health care setting regarding the type of support given to patients and families through the “death and dying” experience?

Using an app like Adobe Spark

My Puppy Milo Link (Links to an external site.)  You will be creating 3 short (1-3 min.) videos.  I suggest using an app like Adobe Spark or ivideo.  Both are free and very easy and fun to use.  You will use your phone to take photos and or videos, then add voice, music and text to add your message and complete your video.  If you do not have a phone that can do this or would rather take a video using a different system, please talk to me after class.

DUE DATE:  Video #1 is due by the end of  Week 2 Sunday 6/27/21 at 11:00pm.  Create your video and upload it to Canvas as a media recording or if the system creates a website URL link, you can submit that link to Canvas on the Assignments tab: Video #1 AND on the Video Viewing Discussion Module (located above Module 1/Week 1).

Please watch each others’ videos so that you can get to know your classmates and what their career goals are!  :)- it’s a lot of fun!!

Video #1 will be used to explain what career you aspire to obtain.  Why does this career speak to you?  Why will medical terminology be important in that career?

Video #2  will be used to teach about a health promotion topic, an illness prevention topic or an illness teaching tool that is specific to a certain illness (you can choose).   These videos should be teaching tools, so they should be developed by health professionals (you) and geared toward lay people.

Please make sure your videos have a clear message, are understandable, are creative and polished looking and use at least 10 medical terminology terms each.

Here is how points will be awarded:

  •  0-3 points possible:  Clear Message
  • 0-2 points possible:  Creative and Polished
  •  Total Points Possible: 5

Physical movement

If you are a tactile learner, you learn by touching and doing. You understand and remember things through physical movement. You are a “hands-on” learner who prefers to touch, move, build, or draw what you learn, and you tend to learn better when some type of physical activity is involved. You need to be active and take frequent breaks, you often speak with your hands and with gestures, and you may have difficulty sitting still.

As a tactile learner, you like to take things apart and put things together, and you tend to find reasons to tinker or move around when you become bored. You may be very well coordinated and have good athletic ability. You can easily remember things that were done but may have difficulty remembering what you saw or heard in the process. You often communicate by touching, and you appreciate physically expressed forms of encouragement, such as a pat on the back.

Here are some things that tactile learners like you can do to learn better:

  • Participate in activities that involve touching, building, moving, or drawing.
  • Do lots of hands-on activities like completing art projects, taking walks, or acting out stories.
  • It’s OK to chew gum, walk around, or rock in a chair while reading or studying.
  • Use flashcards and arrange them in groups to show relationships between ideas.
  • Trace words with your finger to learn spelling (finger spelling).
  • Take frequent breaks during reading or studying periods (frequent, but not long).
  • It’s OK to tap a pencil, shake your foot, or hold on to something while learning.
  • Use a computer to reinforce learning through the sense of touch.

Remember that you learn best by doing, not just by reading, seeing, or hearing.

Q1.  specify AND EXPLAIN three (3) strategies that would help you to improve your learning. Make these applicable to your professional career, e.g. practice in the laboratory or watch a demonstrative video.

( include at least three methods you could employ which would help you learn better, but with a relevant example. E.g. a visual learner might read the instructions before assembling a flat pack table.)
