The abdomen suggestive of ascites

A 3-year-old boy is brought to his pediatrician after his mother notices that his limbs seem swollen and his stomach distended. She says the boy received an influenza shot 1 week ago. Physical examination reveals generalized pitting edema and shifting dullness of the abdomen suggestive of ascites as shown in the figure below. Urinalysis reveals 4+ proteinuria, and laboratory findings show decreased serum albumin. The pathophysiology of this patient’s edema is:
a. Increase hydrostatic pressure
b. Occlusion of the lymphatic system

The cause of osteoporosis

One cause of osteoporosis is low calcium. You have a special gland that has calcium sensors. If it detects low calcium in your blood, the gland sends hormones to your bone cells. Your bone cells then break down and weaken your bones in order to release calcium. This results in higher calcium in your blood.1)What is the control center in this example?2)What is the effector in this example?3)Does this example show negative feedback or positive feedback? How can you tell?

The bilateral infectious parotitis

An 18-year old female, who attends a state university about 90 miles away from home, is brought to her family physician’s office after her parents brought her home because of a mumps epidemic at the university. During the office visit, the patient complained of fever, malaise, myalgia, and anorexia. She also had an ear ache and, due to the swelling of her jaw, reported that it was difficult to chew and swallow. A physical examination found the classic findings of mumps. Both sides of the woman’s face were swollen consistent with bilateral infectious parotitis. Given her recent exposure to other students diagnosed with mumps, the family physician concluded that the patient had mumps and diagnosed her with bilateral infectious parotitis, but could not find evidence of any complications in other body systems. The patient was sent home and was advised to avoid contact with people outside her family. The treatment included analgesics and warm compresses to the parotid area to relieve swelling and reduce symptoms. No medications are known to be effective in treating this viral infection.

Conduction of neural impulses

Which of the following statements accurately describes a function of sleep? Multiple Choice I reduces the production of the chemicals that make up the myelin sheath. It inhibits neural growth and a smooth, rapid conduction of neural impulses. It helps in the cleanup of cerebral toxins that build up throughout the day. It aids in decreasing the exchange of cerebrospinal fluid with intracellular fluid

The arthritis of multiple joints

The patient is seen in the office of an infectious disease specialist who treated her 1-year previously when she had Lyme disease. She complains of generalized joint pain and stiffness. Based on laboratory test results and physical examination, the physician concludes that the patient no longer has active Lyme disease. However, he concludes that her arthritis of multiple joints is the residual effect, or sequelae, of the cured Lyme disease.

The irregular menstrual cycles

The patient is a 25-year-old female who has been experiencing a range of symptoms for the past two months. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, increased sweating, anxiety, and irregular menstrual cycles. The patient has also reported feeling cold and having difficulty concentrating. She has a family history of diabetes, and she is a smoker.

The activity of body systems

Homeostasis depends on the activity of body systems to adjust a variable. Because our bodies work so well to maintain variables at set point, we often do not even notice the systems they use to do it. But in someone who is ill, these systems may not be able to maintain homeostasis; you need to be aware of this to head off possible problems.

The anatomic landmarks

According to the article by Ross CA, which of the following anatomic landmarks is suggested to be the most practical reference point in measuring limb length?

Hip Joint itself
Ischial Tuberosity of the pelvis
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine of the hip
Greater Trochanter of the femur

The progression of Alzheimer disease

In the progression of Alzheimer disease, specific regions of the brain are preferentially affected. Which region is typically first impacted in the early stages of Alzheimer disease?
Frontal lobe
Occipital lobe
Medulla oblongata
Temporal lobe

The general principles of physiology

Chapter 3 contains many examples that demonstrate the eight general principles of physiology described in Chapter 1. For each general principle of physiology listed below, select the example that best represents that principle.
Most physiological functions are controlled by multiple regulatory systems, often working in opposition.

The structure is a determinant of and has coevolved with the function
Controlled exchange of materials occurs between compartments and across cellular membranes.
Physiological processes are dictated by the laws of chemistry and phvsics.
