Heat and moisture exchangers

A patient on mechanical ventilatory support with Heat and Moisture Exchangers (HME) is sectioned for large amounts of foul smelling green sputum. The patient has a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius and a normal white blood count. What is the cause of this issue, what changes would you as the respiratory therapist recommend to for this treatment at this time?
