Traits of leadership

Select a healthcare leader of your choice and using the six key traits of leadership discussed widely in leadership research and/or the seven characteristics of innovative leaders discussed in Weberg & Davidson as a framework, appraise how your selected leader exemplifies these traits. This leader may be a local or national leader (see suggestions). To support your appraisal, consider the following questions (5-7 pages following APA Style Requirements):

40Leader Suggestions: (you are not limited to this list, leaders exist throughout and at all levels of organizations – choose a leader who inspires you):

  • American Presidents: Lyndon B. Johnson ( Medicare), Barack Obama ( Affordable Care Act).
  • Surgeon Generals: US Surgeon General, Dr. Luther Terry (first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health); David Satcher, MD, PhD (US Surgeon General work on Health Care disparities).
  • Health Policy Leaders: Any of the member of the task force responsible for the IOM Report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” IOM Consensus Report October 2010.
  • Nursing Leaders: President of ANA or AANP.
  • Your Health System Leaders: CEO, CNO, Chief Quality Leaders, Unit Leader.
  • Public Health Leaders: Dr. Anthony Fauci, your State Commissioner for Public Health, your Governor.
  • Legislative leaders:
  • National: Lauren Underwood, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Lois Capps.
  • Local: what health care leaders are in your legislature? Are there nurses making change?
  • Community Leaders: Look to your own community – what health care organizations are active and who are the stand out lea
