A river with a flow of 22 MGD is impaired for nutrients, both nitrogen and phosphorous. The TMDL is 1,836 lb/d for nitrate. The regional department of environmental protection established a margin of safety of 72 lb/d for nitrate. Two other permits for nitrate allow waste load allocations of 355 lb/d and 277 lb/d. If a new wastewater treatment plant being built wishes to discharge to this water, what is the maximum waste load allocation for nitrate they could get and still protect beneficial use, assuming no reserve capacity for future development? Nonpoint sources contribute 622 lb/d.

The steps of the scientific method are the following:
Observation
Question
Hypothesis
Experimentation
Data analysis
Conclusion
These steps are not written in stone and may vary depending on the branch of science or the type of experiment.
Watch this video that explains the scientific method.
Now that you know how powerful the scientific method can be, think about a scientific discovery that has made an impact on your life. Then, answer the following questions:
How has this discovery affected your life?
How can science and the scientific method improve people’s lives?
The one scientific discovery that has affected my life is the discovery of antibiotics by Alexander Fleming in 1928. He discovered Penicillin and developed the first antibiotic, which greatly reduces infection in the human body. My mother was not the best parent, and I’m still paying for her poor decisions today. She never took me to the dentist as a kid, and over the years my dental health deteriorated. Thanks to the discovery of the antibiotic penicillin, I’m able to get the infection under control and get some much-needed dental work done.
I think that science plays a considerable role in everyone’s daily living, whether they know it or not. Scientific research helps our society recognize and solve problems, improve existing consumer goods, and cure illnesses. We as a whole have turned a blind eye towards anything that doesn’t benefit us if we can’t see instant results. If a group of scientists would use the scientific method to find a way to get rid of social media and the other distractions that steal our children away from us. I would consider that one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening in the near future. Science is everywhere, and you can choose to understand it or ignore it. That is your right as a living human being. I like knowing how things work, so I stay informed.

Lydia and Christine expected the types of microbes in the soil to change in response to the nitrogen and burning treatments because of the different aboveground plant communities and difference in soil nutrients. Soil microbial communities can change in multiple ways. First, the number of unique species can increase or decrease, measured as richness. The other way is how many individuals of each species there are in the community, measured as evenness. Taken together, richness and evenness give a measure of diversity, which can be summarized using the Shannon-Wiener index. The value will get bigger if either richness or evenness increases because it incorporates both. For example, a community with five species that has equal abundance of each will have a larger Shannon-Wiener index than a community with five species where one species has a lot more individuals than the other four.

You are the environmental health and safety (EHS) manager for a large manufacturing facility and are required to prepare the annual report to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) using the OSHA 300 and 300A forms. During the previous 12 months (January-December), the facility had 2 DART injuries. There was a total of 186,234 hours worked. Calculate the Days Away Restricted or Transferred (DART) Rate, and explain the methodology.

Eco regions are important for understanding the landscape context of an area in which we are working and designing gardens using native plants. Using the EPA website, go to the Level III and IV Ecoregions by State map and choose a state to research and report on. Discuss the information that feels relevant to understanding how to weave an urban landscape design into the existing/historic landscape.

At a larger scale, proposed developments must be studied for what visual impacts are made to the scenic attributes and changes in the human visual experience of the landscape. Visual Impact Assessment is the analysis of the potential visual impacts to the landscape and landscape views resulting from a proposed development or land management action.
Are there any frameworks / principles / regulations for visual impact assessments in Southern California? Discuss what is found. Are there any aspects of the native landscape palette that has guided these decisions?
