To grow in the current health care system, we all need to adapt to new changes. Learning how to make effective change in an organization is key to success. There are different types of leadership styles.  There have been many case studies of successful leadership in healthcare. As an ANP, we need to learn various tools to be successful leaders because there is no such one-size-fits-all approach to management (Delmatoff & Lazarus, 2014).

Answer the following question:

What is your style of leadership, and how do you think the leadership style will make effective change in your workplace?

The size of the development gap

brief statement to a book publisher outlining some of the major misconceptions

that people have regarding world development and the size of the development gap. Many texts use case studies and data that highlight the gap rather than showing effective ways of closing it. This therefore breeds false knowledge and understanding about global development amongst those in the more wealthy parts of the world. Think about the ladder looking down on the rest of the world scenario on the video.

Consider this to include in your response:

1. Evidence for the closing of the development gap
2. The falling fertility rate (not just in so-called MEDC’s)
3. Improvements in Child Mortality rates in so-called LEDC’s
4. Small, basic & significant economic development in rural Africa
5. Future population growth areas
6. Stop blaming the so-called LEDC’s – Show off good environmental practice instead.

Discussion #3: Information Technology and Decision Support

  1. Information Technology is a vital and integral part of healthcare. With the data collected from EHR, how can the data be used to improve outcome?

With data collected from electronic health records, health outcomes have the potential to improve. When patient encounters take place, both medical assistants and healthcare providers enter information into the computer as this is a mandatory aspect of visits and billing currently.  By compiling patient data individually and even as a group, evaluations can be made as appropriate to the type of care being given.  Although this may be laborious if done manually, utilizing computers to do the work for us is a great way to be able to step back and look at numbers and even statistical outcomes.  By evaluating this content, changes have the ability to be made if appropriate to better care for patients.

  1. What other types of data might also be used to improve the outcome?

Specific data may be compiled to evaluate certain aspects of care.  For example, if data collection illustrates half of patients in a certain clinic are not receiving their influenza vaccine, this data can be used by providers as well as medical assistants to address offering the vaccine or the benefits of obtaining the vaccine when contact does take place.  Furthermore, more intensive reviews could even potentially be made by using patient visit information to identify patients who may be at risk for certain comorbidities or health issues.  For example, if a patients’ Body Mass Index (BMI) is 29.9 and the patient is close to entering into the obesity category, and several patients are found to have this same risk throughout the patient population at the given clinic, looking into weight loss techniques or health counseling may be beneficial for both providers as well as patients.

  1. How is the EHR data used in your practice to improve the practice?

Unfortunately, in my current practice, I am not aware EHR data is being utilized for specific data collection.  Electronic communication does take place between patients and staff on the online portal however I am unsure if data is actually being collected.  If it is, this is not widely known.  This is a huge opportunity for improvement and I will definitely contact the appropriate personnel to see if there is anything we can do to make better use of information we are already entering into the computer as this is definitely a lost opportunity to improve patient care.
